Bob’s Noodle House 66

Mrs. Chow and I went to my favorite Chinese place last night–Bob’s Noodle 66 in Rockville MD.  We don’t eat there often because it’s a bit out of our way.  But when we do, we thoroughly enjoy every last bite of the delicious food.

Bob’s is a typical authentic Chinese restaurant, with perhaps a Taiwanese slant to the food.  As with most authentic Chinese restaurants, Bob’s is cash only and offers little in the way of ambiance.   I would highly recommend trying this place out because they make  really good Chinese food.  My parents and extended family are from Taiwan and they all requests Bob’s when they come to visit.  Bob’s is one of the only places in the DC metro area that serves “stinky tofu.”  More on this to follow!

Mrs Chow and I usually order the same four dishes every time we go.

         1.  Crispy Smelled Bean Curd aka Stinky Tofu.   This plate of deliciousness is fermented deep friend tofu in soy sauce with some spicy cabbage on top.  I grew up on this stuff in Taiwan, so I love it.  However, Mrs. Chow does not eat this stuff…she can barely stand the smell.  So I might not recommend this for most people.

         2.  Braised slice pork on rice (or the smaller version–Minced pork and egg on rice).  This is about the best soy sauce marinated pork you’ll ever taste.  The plate comes with some cabbage, marinated egg, marinated chunks of soy sauce pork (fat and all) and marinated ground pork on your rice.

           3.  Pork, dried bean curd, with chives.  This is Mrs. Chow’s favorite dish.  It’s marinated slices of pork with pressed tofu, and Chinese chives.  This dish is full flavored, a little spicy, and will leave you salivating with each bite.

           4.  Spinach with fresh garlic.  This is our favorite vegetable dish.  It’s so simple to make that we’ve attempted to make it at home, but it never turns out as good.  This dish made of fresh spinach stir fried with chunks of garlic.  But be warned, the garlic taste is strong so make sure you will spend the remainder of the evening with someone who will enjoy your company, garlicky breath and all.

If you’re ever in Rockville, definitely check this place out.  We make the special trip because the food is worth it.
