Fluffy Thoughts Cakes

The name of this place is adorable, and their desserts are equally cute to boot.  It’s located on the outside ground floor of an office building in McLean.  A bit of an unusual location, but definitely worth the u-turns and slight confusion.

As soon as I walked into the shop, I was greeted by two very friendly gals and a glass case full of cupcakes.   There were so many varieties to choose from; the usuals like lemon, red velvet, vanilla, chocolate, and the more creative ones like rocky road (which has a toasted marshmallow on top).  They all looked To Die For (TDF!). You can check out the shop’s website for flavors of the day, and a description of all the usual flavors they keep in stock.

It was Mr. Chow’s birthday, so we decided to splurge and get not one, but TWO yummy cupcakes.  His “go to” is carrot cake; mine is red velvet.

When we got home, I took a bite of each cupcake and let me tell you: these are some legit cupcakes!!   The red velvet had a nice chocolate flavor, deep red color, and a frosting that was as cream cheesey as I usually like it.  Best of all, it was so super duper moist.  I really despise the word moist, but when I entered it into thesaurus.com, the suggested options were even worse.  Thoughts, ideas?!!  (note: sorry about photo of red velvet…I dropped the box and she got smooshed)

The carrot cake cupcake was also very tasty and….moist.  The one bite I took was full of spiced cake, a plump raisin, and more cream cheesey frosting.  TDF!   It took a lot of will power to take just one bite, but I had to restrain myself otherwise Mr. Chow might notice that I took a bite out of his cupcake. 🙂

In addition to cupcakes, Fluffy Thoughts Cakes also makes mini cupcakes, wedding cakes, brownies, cookies, and macarons.  Yes, you read that right…..MACARONS!!!  These little gems are my current sugar obsession.  I have tried to make them myself, but with no success.  So whenever I see ’em, I buy ’em.  Fluffy Thoughts sells theirs for $1.25 each…not bad at all.  The flavors of the day were orange, blackberry, chocolate, and raspberry.  I got orange and blackberry and….CHA CHING!!!  These macarons are money!

The cookie part was the right amount of chewy, with very little hollow air space.  The creme filling was the perfect balance of sweetness and creaminess.

I have only tried macarons from a couple of places (bethesda farmers market, Paulette and Miette in CA), and I think this is on par with the places I’ve tried in CA.  Bethesda’s macarons are made with cookies that are too hollow for my liking.  One day I will get to Paris or NYC for Laduree.  ‘Til then, Fluffy Cakes will be my go to spot for macarons.

We tried this place because we had a Living Social or Groupon type of voucher (surprise!).  But trust me when I say that I will be back.  My hips are begging for mercy and my thighs have filed for a legal separation from all forms of sugar,  but I will be back!
