California Vacay – SinBala

No less than 10 minutes after paying our bill at Din Tai Fung, we found ourselves sitting in a casual Taiwanese restaurant right around the corner–SinBala.  We rolled in around 9pm, so there were a bunch of open tables.  Mr. Chow read a bunch of reviews on Yelp beforehand, and knew exactly what he wanted to order.

1. Oyster Pancake:  Nice size, lots of sauce (yum!), good consistency, and big oysters.  I’m no expert on Taiwanese food, but this was very tasty and better than the version I’ve tried at our favorite “Taiwanese” place in MD (Bob’s Noodle).

2. Taiwanese Sausage and Rice: Everyone raved about this on Yelp so we had high expectations.  The dish is a lot of food–eggs, broccoli, rice, and sausage.  This was tasty, but didn’t seem as awesome as expected.

3.  Chicken Nuggets: Crispy, flavorful, delicious, amazing.  This lived up to the hype….and then some.

4.  Pork and Rice dish (name unknown): We hadn’t planned on ordering this, but made a game-time decision after we spotted it on another table.  This dish is harder to find in the DC/MD/VA area, especially in restaurants.  We have only found this in the prepared foods section at the Kam Sam grocery store in Rockville (and formerly Annandale).   We were glad we ordered it because it was a huge portion, and turned out to be delicious mixed with rice.

Next time we are in SoCal, we will definitely be trekking to Arcadia, CA.  In our two hours there, we ate so much tasty food…..just thinking about it makes me happy and bloated. The drive from Rendondo Beach was totally worth it.
